📈 FastAPI with native OpenTelemetry and SQLModel

Issue #5, native OpenTelemetry in FastAPI, and intro to SQLModel

Hello! 👋

I promised I would send you more frequent updates with news.

There’s so much news that’s kinda old by now, but I never got to share it with you here.

So I’ll share some new news, and also some old news that you might have missed (as they didn’t make it to the newsletter).

Let’s go!

📈 New: FastAPI with native OpenTelemetry

FastAPI now has native OpenTelemetry support: traces, metrics, and logs to help you understand what’s happening in your app.

Here’s how the metrics show up by default in FastAPI Cloud on Pro plans. With the latest fastapi[standard], there’s nothing extra to configure. ✨

You can also send telemetry to other compatible monitoring services. Check the docs.

Use FastAPI 0.142.2 (released September 30) or later.

If you use uv, upgrade your FastAPI version with:

uv add "fastapi[standard]>=0.142.2" --upgrade-package fastapi

🗃️ In case you missed it: SQLModel

Back in 2021, I released SQLModel, a library for working with SQL databases using Python type hints.

It combines Pydantic and SQLAlchemy to help you write less duplicated code. And, of course, it’s designed to work well with FastAPI. 🤓

Start with the SQLModel tutorial.

Psst, there’s a lot coming to SQLModel! Stay tuned for updates.

More later

I prefer receiving short newsletters, so I’m trying to do the same.

I’ll send more things later. Let me know if you like this format (you can reply here).

Talk soon! Or see you at FastAPI Conf 👋
